St. John's Church is a National Historic Landmark in recognition as the original location of Patrick Henry's immortal "Give me Liberty or Give me Death!" speech. Throughout the year, St. John's Church conducts educational programming in support of the Virginia Standards of Learning for Virginia Studies.
The historic building powerfully engages students and adults by placing them in the very place where our forebears—including Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington— discussed the issues and enacted the deeds that led to the founding of America.

School Tours
Costumed guides will interpret:
- a discussion of the events in Virginia that led to the American Revolution and the vigorous debates of the Second Virginia Convention, during which Patrick Henry delivered his famous "Give me liberty or give me death!" speech
- Patrick Henry's life and political career highlights of the graveyard, where numerous individuals prominent in Richmond and Virginia history are buried, including George Wythe and Elizabeth Arnold Poe

Historical Reenactments
Professional actors in 1770s attire portray ten delegates, including such prominent Virginians as Richard Henry Lee, Benjamin Harrison, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Your students will witness the democratic process at work through the animated convention debates that culminated in Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death!" speech. Please allow at least one hour when scheduling.

Optional Activity — Graveyard Scavenger Hunt
St. John's Church's graveyard is the final resting place of many people prominent in Virginia and Richmond's history. The scavenger hunt will introduce students to many important historical figures, including the following: - George Wythe, a signer of the Declaration of Independence - Elizabeth Arnold Poe, Edgar Allan Poe's birth mother - Edward Carrington, an important Revolutionary War figure - John Page, governor of Virginia - John Enders, a prominent tobacco businessman Students will receive a sharpened pencil and scavenger hunt form. Please allow at least thirty minutes when scheduling. 2009-2010 Rate: $3.00 per Student

Each school visiting St. John's Church will receive a copy of our "Give me Liberty or Give me Death!" educational materials. These materials will provide pre-visit activities to prepare students for their trip, as well as post-visit activities to assess students' comprehension.

American Revolution Match the Cards Game
In this activity, students will use analytical skills to identify the definition or description that accompanies each person or idea related to the American Revolution. Each description, name, or idea is on a card; students can work individually or in groups to cut the cards apart and match them. The cards can then be pasted onto construction paper and illustrated, or be used to create an interactive class bulletin board about the American Revolution. American Revolution Ordering Activity
In this activity, students will number events in Virginia and Revolutionary history in the order in which they occurred. Teachers can make this activity more kinesthetic by listing the different events on individual cards. Students could cut out the events and move them around until they have the correct sequence; they could then glue the cards on a sheet of paper and create a "time line."
